NEWSLETTER NO. 106
from Barbara in Sierra Leone
January 2009

Hello!
Hello! How are you?
Kushe! Kushe! Aw de bodi?
Buwa! Buwa! Kahunyena?
Happy New Year to you all!
I was very happy to celebrate my 17th anniversary of
arriving in Sierra Leone. I am pleased to say still no regrets even
with its myriad problems which of course many other countries also
have. Indeed, I still regard myself really fortunate to be doing
something and living somewhere I so enjoy.
This was a very quiet month after all the
festivities. School did not open due to the non-payment of the Ministry
of Education (Government) subventions (grants) for the Oct/Nov/Dec and
Jan/Feb/Mar quarters. This is what we use to run the school, pay fees
etc of the secondary and college students, buy food provisions to feed
the children three times a day and to pay the ancillary workers. This
is a continuing problem for all state schools.
We received some bedding and a few portable manual
typewriters from Real Aid (UK) for which we are immensely grateful as
these are now so difficult to get but we continue to need them as
essential equipment for our pupils when they are integrated into
mainstream secondary schools.
As there were no activities with the School not being
open, I have been to St George’s Cathedral every Sunday and enjoy the
services and meeting with all my friends who go there.
Well, as I said,
this was a very quiet month and it just remains for me to close now as
always by sending best wishes to those celebrating birthdays,
anniversaries, and any other happy event. I also send goodwill messages
and solicitations/condolences to those who are not well or have a
bereavement or have received any sad news
From all the children and staff here at the School and myself, I send
all our love and prayers to you and your families and friends.
May God bless
you.
All my love.
Barbara.
