NEWSLETTER NO. 107
from Barbara in Sierra Leone
February 2009

Hello!
Hello! How are you?
Kushe! Kushe! Aw de bodi?
Buwa! Buwa! Kahunyena?
We opened the School at
last – although schools have still not received their subventions from
October ’08 to date, but so much lesson time has been lost and the
children would have a difficult time especially those hoping to go to
secondary schools and those sitting their BECE and WASSCE examinations.
This is a perennial problems which I hope will be resolved in the not
too distant future.
We had a wonderful visit
from our friend, Uncle Julian’s mum Linda. Julian is working in Sierra
Leone for a short time. Linda has worked with special needs children in
the UK and so was very interested in our school. Linda and her husband
worked here during the 60’s and Julian was born whilst they were here in
Segbwema in the South East of the country. So this was a very nostalgic
trip for Linda. She enjoyed her visit and we were really happy meeting
her as she is a lovely and interesting lady and we hope she will visit
again.
At the end of the month,
Peter Penfold and his godson Jack – Aunty Jane & Uncle Bernie’s son –
came out for a three week visit. This was Jack’s first visit and I will
write all about that in the next newsletter.
I want to express our
sincerest thanks and gratitude to our very good friend Uncle Roland and
Aunty Claire, their family and everyone at the Wells School in Somerset,
UK, for the most wonderful donation of a piano for the School. This is
going to be such an asset to our music making.
I want also to thank Rev.
Rueben Dove, who on behalf of all our friends of the Countess of
Huntingdon, UK, donated seven old hand-sewing machines and material. As
our pupils are unable to use these (yet!), we have donated six of them
to our next door neighbours and very good friends, the School for the
Deaf, who were ecstatic to receive them as they do a lot of dressmaking
in their vocational class.
The remaining machine we
gave to our school secretary Hawa who, as some of you will know is a
most talented dressmaker. She it is who sewed all the costumes from my
designs for our UK Tours. She was so happy to receive the machine.
I went to services at St
George’s. One of these was a Krio Thanksgiving – all the Bible readings
and the hymns, etc., were in Krio. It was a wonderful occasion and
everyone thoroughly enjoyed it.
So, another month gone already of the New Year and it just remains for
me to close as always by sending best wishes to those celebrating
birthdays, anniversaries, and any other happy event. I also send
goodwill messages and solicitations/condolences to those who are not
well or have a bereavement or have received any sad news.
From all the children and staff here at the School and myself, I send
all our love and prayers to you and your families and friends.
May God bless
you.
All my love.
Barbara.
