NEWSLETTER NO. 110
from Barbara in Sierra Leone
May 2009

Hello! Hello! How are you?
Kushe! Kushe! Aw de bodi?
Buwa! Buwa! Kahunyena?

Greetings from a hot Salone.  The rains have started although it is mainly at nights at the moment.  It’s wonderful for the garden and although we don’t have to water now, of course the weeds are starting to sprout so quickly that it is hard work keeping them under control.  But it is great to see the things growing from tiny seeds to fruition……. and then to the yummy eating!

Now, before anything else, I know you will join with me in congratulating my sister Lesley and brother-in-law Ken on the celebration of their 40th (Ruby) wedding anniversary!  My love and prayers and those of everyone here at the school go to you both.  I remember when all the family got together in 1983 to celebrate our parents’ Ruby anniversary……. And here we are celebrating one of their (my parent’s) children’s Ruby!  Also, love and congratulations go to one of my nieces, Laura (in fact Lesley & Ken’s youngest daughter), on the occasion of her 30th birthday.

This month was completely taken up with revision and the third term first tests – the last tests (end of year promotional exams) to be held in June.

Unfortunately we still have not had any subvention from the Ministry of Education.  This is now the 5th month without any money from them! and this is what we use to run the school and pay the ancillary staff.  We also unfortunately have the problem with the ‘detractors’ (ex pupils) who want to take over the running of the school.  I know, if it weren’t so tedious, time-consuming and disheartening, it would be hilarious – do they honestly think they could run this school with all the constraints and do they think that people will part with their money when I am certain there would not be any accountability or transparency.  Anyway, we forge ahead and see what happens and hope it will be resolved.  This situation has unfortunately arisen in a few of the schools where the pupils think they can run the schools better than the adults and that they have the right to do just that for some reason.  (Too many rights for the child??!!)

Onto pleasanter things - one of the services at St. George’s Cathedral was for the enrolment of new members of the Mothers Union.  They have a very large and strong membership.  The Cathedral was packed and it was a lovely service.  One of the other services was for the enrolment of new choir members.  The choir also has a very strong membership and again the Cathedral was full.  Their singing as usual was splendid

And on this uplifting note (excuse the pun), it just remains for me to close now as always by sending best wishes to those celebrating birthdays, anniversaries, and any other happy event.  I also send goodwill messages and solicitations/condolences to those who are not well or have a bereavement or have received any sad news.

From all the children and staff here at the School and myself, I send all our love and prayers to you and your families and friends.

Take care and may God richly bless you all.

All my love.

Barbara.
